New Print "Threaded Blue" is a walk through the colours of the woods
Share
This print is named threaded blue because of the mossed and lichenated threads that delve deeply into bark and etch their symbiotic marks. A few weeks ago, I took a walk through the woods near Alderly Edge. It was a very damp day with the rain only offering only a brief reprieve for luckily the time it took to take the walk. I came upon the most gorgeous barks, striated with moss and lichens.
The inspiration for this piece was a particular tree where the grooves in between the pieces of bark were, it seemed, somewhat illuminated by greens and blues. I took a picture and set to work recreating it with lino and embroidery. Some see greens but to colour match this to the best of my ability, I had to use blues- showing the often unexpected and beautiful colours of the woods.
I really enjoyed stitching the lino print, although I'll admit I was extremely nervous to do it. Unlike fabric, if something goes wrong when stitching paper, you can't really take it back as it punches holes directly into the paper that can't be covered. My sewing machine was one of the cheapest models so even though I love it, the thought of trusting it with a freshly dried lino print when I only made two was quite difficult to bear. That said, I loved how it turned out.
Last weekend, my mum invited me to go through all of the sewing things that my grandma left behind after she passed away. She left so many beautiful cotton threads so it was an honour to get to work and a few of them in this piece...some of them are probably over 40 years old!
